The Devil Wears Prada – Space EP

Cover
Apparently all The Devil Wears Prada needs to do to make me a fan is continue making themed EP’s. Zombie wasn’t my favorite record ever, but it was by far and away my favorite thing TDWP had done. And I did enjoy moments of Dead Throne, but after reviewing it, I forgot about it. It just didn’t have any staying paper. Honestly, I didn’t think I’d care much for Space at all.

I don’t know if it’s intentional given the concept of the ep, but the atmosphere that The Devil Wears Prada uses on this ep is a beautiful new element to their sound. It’s not unique, just new for the band. And it rears its head right on the outset of the record. Planet A is the best song I’ve ever heard from the band. Sure, it reminds me of bands I like (Underoath’s final record, The Overseer), but that’s why I dig it. It’s a break from the band’s usual sound. Yes, they still throw in a breakdown, on top of an already existing breakdown, but by the time it’s hits, I’m so engaged in the song that it didn’t matter.

There’s a trash metal element at the beginning of Alien that I really like. It doesn’t last for much of the song but it’s enough to keep me interested. It reminds me what As I Lay Dying used to do so well. Moongod is more of your standard TDWP track, but it also feels like it would’ve fit on the Zombie ep, and I liked that record. Supernova is.. what, the “ballad” of the record? It’s about as soft and tamed as The Devil Wears Prada gets. Asteroid closes the ep and while I don’t hate the song, it’s easily the most uninteresting song on the ep to my ears.

There’s a lot of things I like about this EP. It’s not groundbreaking, but my expectations for the The Devil Wears Prada aren’t very high, so it doesn’t need to be. I hope the band makes a couple more concept EP’s. 3.5 out of 5 Stars.
